“Elemental Light” Exhibit Opens at Eastern
January 12 @ 8:00 am - February 23 @ 5:00 pm
Willimantic, Conn.—The Art Gallery at Eastern Connecticut State University will present the work of Stephen Knapp and Alexander Harding in the exhibition “Elemental Light” from Jan. 12 to Feb. 23, 2017. On Jan. 19, there will be an artist gallery talk from 2-3 p.m. and a reception from 4-6 p.m. Both events are open to the public.
“Elemental Light” showcases the work of two artists who explore the transformational power of light through a similarly experimental approach. Knapp creates installations from deceptively simple elements: metal brackets, a single light source and pieces of dichroic glass. This specially-treated glass refracts and reflects different wavelengths of the spectrum, resulting in luminous and layered “lightpaintings.” An internationally recognized artist, Knapp has had recent solo exhibitions at The Bascom, the Lowe Art Museum, the Hyde Collection and the Dayton Art Institute.
Harding is a Connecticut-based photographer who uses the camera to record improvised experiments with light and every-day materials, morphing vinyl records, grains of salt and television screens into images that recall astronomical or meteorological photographs. Harding’s work has been included in numerous group shows throughout the United States and abroad, most notably “Cultivated: New Photography from New England” and the FIFA International Photography Festival in Brazil.
The Art Gallery is located in Room 112 of the Fine Arts Instructional Center on the Eastern Connecticut State University campus. Parking is available in Cervantes Garage and in the Student Center parking lot. Gallery hours are Tuesday and Wednesday 11 to 5 p.m., Thursday 1 to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 2 to 5 p.m. For more information regarding this and other exhibitions at The Art Gallery, please call (860) 465-4659 or visit http://www.easternct.edu/artgallery/.
