A student enrolled in EASTCONN’s Arts at the Capitol Theater (ACT) magnet high school has been published in Rattle Magazine’s 2018 Anthology of Young Poets. Thirty-six poets, ages 16 or younger, were chosen for publication.
ACT sophomore Ellis McGinley’s original poem, The Funeral, was selected from among thousands of submissions. McGinley studies creative writing at ACT and resides in Ashford.
“The Funeral is a poem in a series inspired by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. It is about my grandfather’s funeral when I was very young, and the fragments of memories I’ve held on to since then,” said McGinley.
McGinley’s future plans include attending college to obtain a teaching degree and working towards a career as a published writer.
“We are extremely proud of Ellis for being recognized by Rattle in the youth anthology,” said ACT Principal Sarah Mallory. “The piece being published gives a unique perspective of death from the lens of a young child and highlights Ellis’s ability to write about a broad range of topics. Our writing program encourages students to find their creative voice and gain the confidence to share their unique perspectives with a diverse audience.”
Rattle Magazine began publishing an annual anthology of young poets in 2013, in addition to their other poetry publications. According to their website, more than 35,000 poems are submitted annually for publication, but Rattle publishes only 250. Fourteen Pulitzer Prize winners have been published in Rattle.
