February Member News From The Last Green Valley

Join Us For Our Third Annual Celebration of Spring

We’re planning the Third Annual Spring Outdoors to be held March 20 to June 21, 2018. Like Walktober, Spring Outdoors features a variety of adventures from strolls to long distance hikes and paddles to bikes and more!

Spring Outdoors began in 2016 as a fun way to celebrate nature’s return from its winter slumber in The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor. In just its first two years, Spring Outdoors bloomed into an event featuring more than 210 adventures attended by more than 18,000 people.

Applications to host a Spring Outdoor Adventure are currently available. Hosts must either be a member or a partner of The Last Green Valley.

Cleanup Grants Available

Show your love for The Last Green Valley by organizing an Earth Month or River Cleanup. Gather your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers, and make a difference in your community. Over the last six years, 7,789 volunteers have collected 248,516 pounds of trash from our parks, rivers, and roadways!

Join Chief Ranger Bill Reid and Rangers John Kochinskas and Kevin Kelley for a winter hike (or if we have enough snow, a snowshoe hike). The hike starts at the Mansfield Hollow Boat Launch at 10 am. Depending on the conditions of the trails, the group will either do a two-mile loop hike in the park or a longer loop hike around the northern section of Mansfield Hollow Lake. Acorn Adventure

Bobcat Tracks and More

with Wyndham Land Trust

Saturday, Feb. 17, 10 – 11:30 am

Lyon Preserve, Pomfret, off Route 101

Children and their families are invited to join The Last Green Valley as we team up with Wyndham Land Trust to learn about bobcats in The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor and search for the tracks they and other animals leave at Lyon Preserve in Pomfret, which is off Route 101.The preserve has parking and a fairly flat trail, good for strollers and little legs. We’ll explore animal trails and walk down to the pond on the property and see if bobcats, turkeys, cottontail rabbits, minks or other creatures have been visiting. Kids will also take home some materials they can use to explore more with their families and learn more about animal tracking.
