How to Save Money and Energy In the Warmer Weather

It’s finally time to prepare for the warm weather season. Eversource is providing home energy tips for Connecticut residents to save money and energy through the summer months and beyond. Here are some tips to follow:

  • The up-and-down temperatures of the spring season can force you to constantly adjust your home’s thermostat. On cooler days, make sure your drapes are open to welcome the sun’s natural heat – then trap it in at night by drawing your curtains closed. During a mild or hot day, you should keep your drapes shut in order to block out the sun’s rays and avoid turning on your AC.

  • Don’t forget that your heating and cooling systems need some attention, too. Before we enter the hot summer months, make sure to service your cooling system and clean out the filters of AC room units. Once the higher temperatures kick in, you can assess how your heating equipment performed over the winter and make upgrades well before the next turn in season. If any of your equipment is ten years or older, consider replacing it with a new, efficient ENERGY STAR® model to avoid a breakdown when you really need it.

  • Installing a “smart” or programmable thermostat will also put you in control of your home’s heating and cooling system, which will help you save energy and stay comfortable. These devices make it easy to adjust for cooler nights and warmer days, and also for when you’re at home, work, or school.

  • Air sealing helps maintain a consistent, comfortable temperature, no matter the season. Sealing cracks and gaps in walls, attics, and crawl spaces will keep warm air inside during a chilly, rainy day, but it will also keep warm air out when your cooling system is working overtime in the middle of a heat wave. Additionally, air sealing helps keep dust and pollen out – which is even more important during allergy season.
